The Reconnect Project: Rafter

Reconnectsmall

The Reconnect Project has appointment #3! I’m meeting up with old grade school buddy Rafter next week (day not decided, but it’s pushing through!), 5ish in the afternoon, at Makati Cinema Square.

Rafter (why must I call you by that ridiculous name, D?) and I have known each other for more than 20 years. He was a classmate of mine in Grade 1, and even if we moved on from JASMS, our elementary school, into separate institutions, we’ve always kept in touch. He is truly one of my closest friends, even if we don’t see each other regularly. [Cathy still hasn't quite forgiven me for not making him best man at our wedding.]

Rafter is a great guy, hardworking and introspective. He was always good at taking my backhanded criticism and he’s a great comic to boot. I’m really looking forward to seeing him again, and spending some quality time together, buying pirated CDs and talking about how Janet Jackson has no career. [He may just cancel his appointment after reading this.]

Expect photos and a writeup!

The Reconnect Project is my attempt to, well, reconnect, with friends from the past. It’s just catching up, sharing maybe half an hour, letting me know what’s up with you. If you’d like to meet up for coffee or a snack in Makati City, please send me a private message and I’ll set it up.

The Reconnect Project: Nix

January 5th, 2007 by superblessed

The Reconnect Project has appointment #2! I’m meeting up with old high school buddy Nix this coming Monday at 1130AM, Recipes, Greenbelt 3.

I met Nix in my freshman year at La Salle Greenhills. He and I were classmates in the honors’ class, but we never really got to know each other until about junior year, when we kinda bumped into each other and learned that we were sorta like neighbors in the village where our homes were. We then became roommates in college, and I can honestly say that he’s probably a friend who’s got the most influence on me, despite our not having kept in touch. [My mom still hasn't quite forgiven me for not making him best man at our wedding.]

Nix is a spectacular businessman and an even more spectacular human being. Words can’t express how gracious and God-fearing this man is. I hate having lost touch with him the past few years, and I’m looking forward to really reconnecting with him and learning about life, business, and a lot of other things at our lunch next week. Expect photos and a writeup!

The Reconnect Project: RubyCube

January 4th, 2007 by superblessed

The Reconnect Project is off to a great start! I’m meeting up with old college pal RubyCube next week at 6PM, the Soup Kitchen, Paseo Center.

RubyCube and I met up in Ateneo when we co-founded the Literary Society. We’ve since shared a lot of laughs, a ton of stories, and a common faith. I haven’t seen her since a chance encounter in church a few months back, and I’m looking forward to our coffee-and-donuts snack next week. Expect photos and a writeup!

The Jabez Journal

August 8th, 2006 by superblessed

In 2000, a book titled The Prayer of Jabez, written by a Christian man named Bruce Wilkinson, swept its way to the top of the bestseller lists. This book revolves around the account of a man named Jabez (whose name, ironically, means ’sorrow-maker’ or ‘Oh the pain!’), whose powerful prayer was answered by God. This is the full story of Jabez (1 Chr. 4:9-10, The Message translation):

"Jabez was a better man than his brothers, a man of honor. His mother had named him Jabez (Oh, the pain!), saying, "A painful birth! I bore him in great pain!" Jabez prayed to the God of Israel: "Bless me, O bless me! Give me land, large tracts of land. And provide your personal protection—don’t let evil hurt me." God gave him what he asked."

In just two verses, we can learn so much about how to claim victory in our lives. Take a look:

Jabez was a man of honor who prayed to the God of Israel.

Jabez was no Sunday church-goer; he practiced what he preached and believed in (’he was a man of honor’). This man had a relationship with God. The NIV translation reads ‘Jabez cried out to the God of Israel.’ When we run to people we love and trust in earnest to ask for something, like a child to his parents, we cry out, don’t we? This was Jabez running to God, and we know we, like Jabez, can run to God confidently, approaching his mercy throne, when we have that intimate relationship.

Jabez prayed to the God of Israel: "Bless me, O bless me!"

Jabez’s prayer resounds with the earnest persistence of a man who just won’t quit. Not one ‘bless me,’ but two. Back in those days, this is what it meant to be blessed by God, and God did bless those who really wanted it, for some, even turning their lives around completely (e.g., Jacob, who was a liar and cheater before becoming Israel).

"Give me land, large tracts of land."

The NIV version says ‘Enlarge my territory.’ What’s wrong with wanting more territory? God wants to prosper you and give you land, i.e., BIG THINGS. Big, grand, wonderful things that you can use to bring glory to His name.

"And provide your personal protection…"

Jabez asked for God’s personal protection. What are the implications of that? It means Jabez asked God to be with him. Always. That kind of close, intimate, personal relationship that means God will always provide, which we are also assured of in Phil 4:19.

"—don’t let evil hurt me."

Jabez asked God to keep us free from all harm, which is also part of the prayer that Christ encouraged us to pray in Matthew 6:13. There is nothing wrong in asking God to help us remain healthy and holy.

"God gave him what he asked."

No explanations. God just did it. :)

After the breakthroughs I experienced last Saturday (visit http://www.gannsdeen.com), I have full faith in God’s power and desire to answer your prayers. Call upon Him and pray a similar prayer daily. That was part of the deal - don’t give up, storm the gates of heaven with prayer from a sincere heart.

Start clean with Christ (here’s how), and walk in God’s way (Here’s how).

Starting tomorrow, I claim victory over many things in the name of Jesus, crying out to God to bless me, to enlarge my territory, to protect me, and to not let evil hurt me. Each victory will receive ample coverage in the ‘Jabez Journal’ category. I strongly encourage you to try it out too, to claim what is rightfully yours, in the name of Jesus, and see how God can work absolute signs and wonders in your life.

Pinoy Dream Academy - give me a song title!

July 11th, 2006 by superblessed

I learned over the KATHA Yahoogroups that Pinoy Dream Academy is looking for song submissions. Sixteen songs - in the vein, I imagine, of A Moment Like This, Believe, and Inside Your Heaven, among other American Idol I-will-survive-and-triumph-over-adversity tracks - will be chosen, and each composer gets P100,000.00.

Wow. I want in on that action. :D

And here’s a chance for you to get in on that action, too! LOL Give me a song title that I can use for my entry to the Pinoy Dream Academy
songwriting competition. I’ll use the song title I like best, and will
give the person who suggested it P3,000 if the song (with your title!)
makes it into the finals.

Fairly odd parent

So on our way to work, Cathy and I passed by this old woman, easily in her 50s (but could be in her 40s, if her life was really difficult).  What struck Cathy and me was that she was pregnant. I mean, wow, we were shocked more than anything.

Buntis si Lola. If that isn’t the strangest thing yet.
